Latest! August 2007 We are now ringing our bells again from the new floor level ringing chamber.
Toilets have been installed.
Just before the building works started we rang a ¼ peal of Grandsire Doubles with an all Chalgrove band, this being the last ground floor ring.
The Bells
The western stone Tower contains a Ring of six bells with a Tenor of approx. 16cwt in the key of E Natural.
The 4th bell has had its canons removed, the rest still retaining their canons. All bells have had their cast-in staples removed and all have been quarter-turned.
The 5th bell has been skirted to raise its strike note and all others have been flattened by chip tuning.
The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th bells are listed in the Council for Care of Churches “Schedule of Bells for Preservation” in the Diocese of Oxford.
Bell Frame
This is constructed of oak and installed by Messrs Bond in 1888.
Historical extract [Unknown source]
“ As for the Tower t’was old and ruinous, and on 29th December 1726 it fell down after a peal of six bells….. When the tower collapsed, bell five and the tenor were broken but later recast in 1729. Now there is a maiden in the tower – the tenor having been cast without blemish. The treble and bells two, three and four are dated 1664 while the Sanctus bell or Ting-Tang has been calling the faithful since 1652.”
